Passport Fees, by Country
Australia's A$422 is the most expensive standard adult passport fee in this table; Poland's 140 zł is the cheapest — though these are each country's own currency at face value, not converted to a common one, so a straight ranking isn't a precise cost comparison. Most governments now price online or digital applications cheaper than paper or in-person ones.
Last updated 2 November 2026.
A passport fee sounds like it should be one simple number, but most governments price it by channel (online vs. paper), by validity (10-year vs. 5-year), and sometimes by age bracket. This table standardises on the figure most adults actually pay: a standard full-adult passport, 10-year validity, domestic application, non-expedited processing, via the cheapest standard channel the government itself advertises.
Figures are each country's own currency, at face value, not converted to a common currency — see the methodology section for why a face-value ranking isn't a precise cost ranking once exchange rates are applied.

What's included: the government's standard fee for a full-adult (the age a country treats as its complete adult bracket — 16 in most of these countries, 18 in Australia and Germany's lower under-24 rate) passport, at the longest validity that bracket gets (10 years in every country here), applied for domestically, at routine (non-expedited) speed, via the cheapest standard channel the government itself advertises — usually online. Where a government prices the same passport differently by channel (the UK, Ireland, Singapore all charge more for paper or in-person), the cheaper standard channel is shown and the other is noted.
What's excluded: expedited/rush fees, passport cards (the US issues a separate, cheaper land/sea-only card), minors' passports, replacement or lost-passport fees, and the surcharge several countries add for applying from overseas (used only where it's the single route, which isn't the case for any country in this table).
The United States is priced as a first-time application, not a renewal. A first-time adult passport book costs $165 ($130 application fee plus a $35 execution/acceptance fee, charged separately and paid to different recipients). Renewing an existing passport via form DS-82 skips the execution fee and costs $130 — cheaper, but not the figure most first-time readers are asking about.
Why the United Arab Emirates isn't here. Every other country in this table is backed by a government fee page or a named piece of legislation, read directly or clearly corroborated. The only figure found for the UAE — AED 50, from a single 2024 news article citing a 2022 Cabinet resolution — is roughly 2 to 8 times cheaper than every other country here and couldn't be checked against ICP's own displayed fee table or the primary legal text after repeated attempts. Rather than publish an unconfirmed outlier, it's left out until a confirmable source turns up.
Limits of this comparison. Figures are each country's own currency, face value, with no FX conversion — treat a 'cheapest/most expensive' ranking as directional, not exact, once exchange rates are applied.
Which country has the cheapest standard adult passport here?
By face value, Poland at 140 zł (with an even lower 70 zł rate for students, large families and several other groups). Currencies aren't converted here, so this is a directional comparison, not an exact ranking once exchange rates are applied.
Which is the most expensive?
Australia, at A$422 for a standard 10-year adult passport lodged domestically — more than double most other countries in this table by face value, though again not a converted, apples-to-apples comparison.
Does this include rush or expedited processing?
No — every figure here is the routine, non-expedited fee. Expedited service costs extra almost everywhere: the US adds $60, the Czech Republic's fast-track service costs 3,000–6,000 Kč on top of the standard fee.
Why does the United States show $165, when I've seen $130 quoted elsewhere?
$130 is the U.S. State Department's own application fee, but a first-time applicant also pays a separate $35 execution fee to whichever acceptance facility processes the paperwork — two payments to two different recipients, totalling $165. Renewing an existing passport by mail (form DS-82) skips the execution fee and is $130 total.
Why isn't the United Arab Emirates in this table?
The only fee figure available for UAE citizen passports comes from a single secondary news report, not from the immigration authority's own fee table or the primary legal text, and it's an outlier — far lower than every other country here. Rather than publish a number we couldn't independently confirm, it's excluded until a verifiable source is found.
